What is European carbon farming?
European Regulation 2024/3012 defines the framework and methodologies for generating carbon credits from public and private certification schemes recognized by the EU.
Specifically, carbon farming includes a set of territorial and agricultural management practices implemented for a minimum period of five years, aimed at two main objectives:
Carbon sequestration: capture carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere and temporarily store it in natural elements such as soil, vegetation and biomass. Emission reduction: decrease the release of greenhouse gases that naturally comes from managed lands.
These practices apply to both terrestrial environments (agricultural fields, forest lands, pastures) and coastal ones, transforming these ecosystems into true 'carbon sinks'.
What is a carbon credit?
Carbon credits are certificates that attest that one ton of CO₂ has not been emitted or has been removed from the atmosphere in an additional way compared to ordinary management.
In the case of European carbon farming, the scope of application is the reduction of soil emissions or absorption in soil and biomass. These climate benefits are obtained through the introduction of sustainable agricultural and forestry practices and are tracked in the registries of certification schemes recognized by the European Union.
Private individuals, companies, entities or institutions can buy these credits and retire them in their own name as their climate contribution.

Folia provides the certification scheme and the credit registry. You can hand the project over to a manager: they define the activity and monitoring plan with you, handle deadlines and dealings with certification, and take the credits to market. For smaller farms they open collective projects to join.

The sampling plan, the collection on your land and the laboratory analyses are a separate service, and you choose the provider. They establish how much carbon your soil holds today: the measure the project starts from.

This is the only figure the scheme requires: verification is carried out by an accredited certification body, independent of Folia, of the same kind that already certifies organic farming. It is what makes your credits credible and sellable.

An MRV provider collects data on your field operations, calculates the carbon stored and the emissions avoided, and produces the reports the scheme requires. You can go to a dedicated provider or through the project operator.
