What is European carbon farming?
European Regulation 2024/3012 defines the framework and methodologies for generating carbon credits from public and private certification schemes recognized by the EU.
Specifically, carbon farming includes a set of territorial and agricultural management practices implemented for a minimum period of five years, aimed at two main objectives:
Carbon sequestration: capture carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere and temporarily store it in natural elements such as soil, vegetation and biomass. Emission reduction: decrease the release of greenhouse gases that naturally comes from managed lands.
These practices apply to both terrestrial environments (agricultural fields, forest lands, pastures) and coastal ones, transforming these ecosystems into true 'carbon sinks'.
What is a carbon credit?
Carbon credits are certificates that attest that one ton of CO2 has not been emitted or has been removed from the atmosphere in an additional way compared to ordinary management.
In the case of European carbon farming, the scope of application is the reduction of soil emissions or absorption in biomass. These climate benefits are obtained through the introduction of sustainable agricultural and forestry practices and are tracked in the registries of certification schemes recognized by the European Union.
Private individuals, companies, entities or institutions can purchase these credits and use them to offset their own emissions.
